WECBOF BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Western Cape Business Opportunities Forum (WECBOF) is a membership-based organisation representing previously disadvantaged companies in the construction, engineering and manufacturing industries as well related professional services.
Currently we have an active membership of 520 businesses. We also have 22 Corporate partners.
The Western Cape Business Opportunities Forum was founded in January 1995 on the initiative taken by local business people, academics and other prominent members of the economic community. The formation of this body dedicated to finding, creating and encouraging business opportunities in the region, was the culmination of months of discussion on how hitherto disadvantaged small and medium enterprises could be assisted in achieving their goals.
WECBOF’s first step was to establish an area of interest, after which a mission statement was formulated with the aim of effectively contributing to the economic and social development of the region. It sought to serve the interest of the region and its people, working towards economic democracy in addition to political freedom.
Discussion were held over an extended period about organisation-building and what would serve best the interest of the target group as set out in our Mission Statement that reads as follows.
WECBOF aims to represent the interest of the BLACK (African, Coloured and Indian) BUSINESS COMMUNITY of the Western Cape which specialises in the MANUFACTURING, ENGINEERING, CONSTRUCTION and any related PROFESSIONAL SERVICES.
WECBOF’s approach to assisting our members is three – pronged namely – access to training, access to opportunities and access to finance.
WECBOF’s mission is to contribute effectively to the economic and social development of the region by;
- Co-ordinating business relationships among its members, identifying business opportunities, facilitating the development of local capital and promoting the development of local capital and promoting the development of technology in the region
- Serving as a support group to effect changes beneficial to Black Business people and striving for the upliftment of the disadvantaged communities in the Western Cape. Assisting people with professional skills desiring the establishment of their own business
- Seeking contact and investment opportunities from abroad and establishing relationships with prospective business associates abroad; and
- Developing and propagating a strong code of business conduct which will be guided by the principles of non-racialism, non-sexism and democracy, and a sustained sense of social responsibility.
The Road ahead can be summarised through our short and long-term objectives.

- Contribute to regional economic development
- Foster an awareness and adherence to sound business ethics.
